Chivvy Poem Class 7 Summary Stanza Wise & Explanation in English

Introduction

The word โ€œchivvyโ€ means to tell someone do something repeatedly. In this poem, a child describes his hate for the grown-ups (elders) because they keep throwing advices to the children. This behaviour of elders irritates the children. The poem is written in a single long stanza. However I have divided it into two parts for better understanding.

Part 1

Grown-ups say things like:
Speak up
Donโ€™t talk with your mouth full
Donโ€™t stare
Donโ€™t point
Donโ€™t pick your nose
Sit up
Say please
Less noise
Shut the door behind you
Donโ€™t drag your feet
Havenโ€™t you got a hankie?

The child says that grown-ups (elders) keep saying things like โ€œspeak upโ€, โ€œdonโ€™t talk while you are eatingโ€, โ€œdonโ€™t stare at othersโ€, โ€œdonโ€™t point fingers at othersโ€, โ€œdonโ€™t put your finger in noseโ€, โ€œsitโ€, โ€œtalkโ€, โ€œdonโ€™t make nouseโ€, โ€œshut the doorโ€, โ€œdonโ€™t drag your feetโ€, โ€œwhy donโ€™t you have your hankie?โ€.

Part 2

Take your hands out of
your pockets
Pull your socks up
Stand up straight
Say thank you
Donโ€™t interrupt
No one thinks youโ€™re funny
Take your elbows off the table
Canโ€™t you make your own
mind up about anything?

Elders further say, โ€œtake your hands out of your pocketsโ€, โ€œpull your socks upโ€, โ€œstand up straightโ€, โ€œsay, thank youโ€, โ€œdonโ€™t interruptโ€, โ€œno one thinks you are funnyโ€, โ€œtake your elbows off the tableโ€ and so on.

The child asks them rhetorically, canโ€™t they do these things by themselves and leave them (children) alone and donโ€™t chivvy all the time.
