- Bahadur Shah Zafar was the last Mughal emperor of India.
- He was born in 1775 and ascended the throne after his father’s death in 1837.
- By the time he came to power, the Mughal empire had lost all of its former glory.
- The Mughal empire Bahadur Shah ruled covered only Delhi and a few surrounding areas.
- Most of India was under the control of the British by this time.
- During the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, Bahadur Shah was named the Emperor of India by many rebelling rulers.
- However, the British ultimately curbed the rebellion and took control of the whole of India.
- The British exiled him to Rangoon for his involvement in the mutiny.
- He died in Rangoon at the age of 87.
- He was also a poet who wrote Urdu poetry.
