A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of ‘Sports and Sportsmanship’.
Allow me to define these two terms individually. Google defines the term ‘Sport’ to be “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.”
Meanwhile, it defines the term ‘sportsmanship’ to be “fair and generous behaviour or treatment of others, especially in a sporting contest.” Wikipedia sheds more clarity on this. It states as follows: “Sportsmanship is an aspiration or ethos that a sport or activity will be enjoyed for its own sake. This is with proper consideration for fairness, ethics, respect, and a sense of fellowship with one’s competitors.”
Sports and sportsmanship are thus two terms that go hand in hand- or at least, they should! A person indulged in sports, that is, a good sportsman must practice sportsmanship, understanding that ‘you win some, you lose some’!
