Dear Nayana,

I hope you and your family are happy and doing well. How was Children’s Day celebrated at your school? Have you read in the newspaper about the bravery awards? They are a set of awards given to children under the age of 18 for their meritorious bravery. Every year, about 25 children are selected for this award. This award is given by the Government of India and was instituted in 1957. On Gandhi Jayanti that year, Jawaharlal Nehru was attending a performance at Delhi’s Romila Ground. A short circuit causes fire to break out in a decorated tent on the ground. A 14-year-old boy, Harish Chandra, took his knife and ripped open the tent, saving thousands of lives. This inspired Nehru, who asked the authorities to institute the bravery awards. As a result, Harish Chandra was the first person to receive a bravery award. Every year, bravery awards are announced on November 14 and presented to the recipients on the eve of Republic Day. Do you know anything more about these awards?

Bye and take care

Your friend
