  1. Begum Hazrat Mahal was born in 1820.
  2. She was the second wife of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the Nawab of Awadh.
  3. She was the Regent of Awadh from 1857 to 1858.
  4. During the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, she played an important role in leading the Awadhis against the British.
  5. Her husband had been exiled to Calcutta when the Mutiny began.
  6. So, she made her son Biqris Qadr the ruler of Awadh, and became his Regent.
  7. However, ultimately the British defeated the mutineers and assumed control over India.
  8. So, Begum was forced to abandon her role as the Regent.
  9. She fled from the British and found asylum in Nepal.
  10. She died in Nepal in 1879.
