- Begum Hazrat Mahal was born in 1820.
- She was the second wife of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the Nawab of Awadh.
- She was the Regent of Awadh from 1857 to 1858.
- During the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, she played an important role in leading the Awadhis against the British.
- Her husband had been exiled to Calcutta when the Mutiny began.
- So, she made her son Biqris Qadr the ruler of Awadh, and became his Regent.
- However, ultimately the British defeated the mutineers and assumed control over India.
- So, Begum was forced to abandon her role as the Regent.
- She fled from the British and found asylum in Nepal.
- She died in Nepal in 1879.
