Dear Meenakshi,

I hope you and your loved ones are happy and doing well. Two days ago, I received the letter my cousin Arnav, who is settled in New Delhi, wrote. He has written about the Ganesh puja they had at their home. Ganesh pooja is performed in homes as part of Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayak Chaturti, or the birthday of Lord Ganesha.

Eleven days before Ganesh Chaturthi, idols of Lord Ganesha are installed and worshipped in homes and public places by certain groups. On these eleven days, people perform pooja, worship the idol, and prepare and offer sweet dishes such as modakas. Modaka is a dumpling made of coconut and jaggery and coated in either rice or wheat flour.

This festival commemorates new beginnings because Lord Ganesh is revered as the remover of all obstacles. People immerse Ganesha idols in rivers or other bodies of water after pooja on the eleventh day. It is believed that when the idols are immersed, all the obstacles are also removed.

Bye and take care

Your friend
