Wikipedia defines the term ‘Janmashtami’ as follows: “Krishna Janmashtami lit. ”Occasion of the birth of Krishna”, also known simply as Krishnashtami, Janmashtami, or Gokulashtami, is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu.”
Janmashtami is thus one of the most important festivals celebrated by Hindus. On this, idols of Lord Krishna as a baby are decorated and worshipped. Offerings favoured by him, such as dairy products (especially butter) are offered to the God and shared.
The exact date slightly varies every year. This 2023, it is celebrated on the 6th of September (or 7th).
