Bismillah Khan, often referred to by the title Ustad, was an Indian man. His original name was Qamruddin Khan. He was an Indian musician credited with popularising the shehnai, a reeded woodwind instrument. He got the inspiration to play shehnai from his maternal uncle Ali Bux at Benaras.
He received training from his uncle by the age of six. One interesting fact about this man was that he was born into a family of court musicians in Bihar. Ustad Bismillah Khan was awarded India’s highest civilian honour. the Bharat Ratna, in 2001. He died at the age of 90 on 21 August 2006.
