A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of ‘soccer’.
Wikipedia defines the term as follows: “Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players who primarily use their feet to propel a ball around a rectangular field called a pitch.”
Google, meanwhile, states that soccer is “a form of football played by two teams of eleven players with a round ball which may not be handled during play except by the goalkeepers.”
Simply put, soccer is nothing but association football and is largely not different from regular football. Soccer, in fact, is the term used by the countries United States of America, Canada, and Australia to refer to football.
Interestingly, the word ‘soccer’ is said to come from a slang abbreviation of the word ‘association’, which British players of the day adapted as “assoc,” “assoccer” and eventually soccer or soccer football!
