A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of ‘History and Legend.’
Before looking at history and legend in relation to one another, allow me to elaborate on each of these terms individually first.
Google defines the term ‘history’ to be “the study of past events, particularly in human affairs.” Meanwhile, it defines the term ‘legend’ to be “a traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but not authenticated.”
From the given definitions, it can be understood that history and legend thus are generally considered to be binary opposites. History is the factual information provided as opposed to the folklore and traditional stories that have been passed along for generations. In this sense, legends predominantly would be a part of oral tradition; history would consist of written records.
Although different, both history and legends are important in their own way. While history offers chronicled facts, legends give insight into various cultures and socities.
