Janmashtami is a Hindu festival in which people celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna is an avatar of Lord Vishnu. Janmashtami is made up of two words- Janma and Ashtami. Janma means birth and Ashtami means the eighth day.

Lord Krishna was born in the midnight and so the celebrations on this day take place late in night. It is a major festival for Hindu people and it is celebrated in different ways.

People clean their houses and decorate them with lights and flowers. They bring new clothes for the icon of baby Lord Krishna and cook things to distribute them as โ€œprasadโ€. People cook two dishes, one with the wheat flour known as Panjiri and the other with curd which was Lord Krishnaโ€™s favourite.

Many people also fast till midnight. It is the festival which is celebrated by people of every age in their own way.

The youth celebrate it by playing a ritual game known as Dahi-Handi. They hang an earthen pot filled with curd high above the ground. Each team members form a human pyramid by climbing on each otherโ€™s backs and who are able to break the pot in one go, wins.
