A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of ‘Social Media’.
Google defines the term ‘social media’ to be “websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.”
Wikipedia gives a more elaborate definition. It states as follows: “Social media are interactive technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, interests, and other forms of expression through virtual communities and networks.”
Simply put, social media is an amalgamation of the predominant rulers of our lives- namely, Whatsapp, Instagram, and Twitter to say a few!
With social media comes the conundrum of whether it is good or bad. Whether or not social media is a boon or a bane, I believe, solely lies in the hands of the user. Like everything present online, social media has both pros and cons.
Looking at the pros, it can be noted that social media can be very informative. Social media today is a very important source of communication, news, and the happenings of the world not just regionally but on the global level. Social media makes them one fingertip away!
With social media, one is also enabled to gain a lot of knowledge and a better understanding of the world. Social media thus offers a wide platform to explore various things. One can develop their communication skills and social circle for the better with the help of social media. In this sense, it is a boon.
At the same time, misuse of the same results in dire consequences, including cyberbullying, false rumours, peer pressure, depression, and anxiety- its negative impact thus. Cyber crimes, perhaps, are the most glaring con of social media. Here, it becomes a bane.
Whether or not social media is a boon or a bane is thus up to us. Use it consciously.
