Good morning one and all. Respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends, it is my pleasure and privilege to stand before you today. I am honored to have this opportunity to speak to such a distinguished audience.Today on this occasion, I would like to talk about and bring your attention to the causes and impacts of climate change.
Climate change is a very real and alarming threat to the existence of humankind and this world.
The earth’s climate is changing at a drastic rate and the far reaching impacts are catastrophic. The cause of this alarming change is human activity. Regardless of the fact whether we accept or deny, undoubtedly each one of us is somehow responsible for this miserable state of our planet.
One of the major contributors to climate change is the burning of fossil fuels for transportation and power supply that leads to large emissions of carbon dioxide into the environment, which traps heat and contributes to global warming. Our planet is getting warmer and the evidence is all around us. It is not just the heat, but also the rising sea levels that are causing great concern now.
The warm temperatures are causing glaciers to melt and thus increasing water levels which ultimately lead to floods. One disaster leads to another and the whole chain of nature is disrupted causing great loss of biodiversity and life. Another cause for this catastrophe is deforestation. The clearing of forests inevitably impacts the climate.
However, all hope is not lost. Even now there is time to take the right actions and slow this adversity and even reverse the effects. If everyone unites, we can reduce our carbon footprints by using cycles or walking or even taking public transport instead of private vehicles.
We must be mindful of our energy consumption and try to save our resources and not exploit them. It is also the duty of the responsible governments to devise schemes and policies that promote renewable energy and build sustainable infrastructures.
The most important factors are awareness and action. I have attempted to make you aware , now it lies the collective responsibility of all of us to take appropriate actions and save our planet. Thank you.
