1 Minute Speech on Democracy In English

A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I’ll be giving a speech on the topic ‘democracy’.

What is a democracy? Abraham Lincoln defines it as ‘government of the people, by the people and for the people’.

Etymologically, the term ‘Democracy‘ is derived from two Greek words ‘Demos’, which means ‘the people’, and ‘Kratos’, which means power. Thus, the literal meaning of the word ‘democracy’ is ‘power of the people’.

Thus all the power in a democratic government lies in the hands of the people. There is no monarch or dictator who can rule and take decisions. The government as a whole is accountable to the people and has to be transparent before the citizens. They thus hold the authority to make decisions and challenge them as seen fit.

India is a democratic country. People as a whole vote and select who ought to lead them by free will.

Thank you!
