The Cellular Jail, often referred to as Kala Pani, was a colonial jail situated in the Indian islands of Andaman and Nicobar.
The British constructed it in 1896 to serve as a prison for political prisoners.
Each cell in the prison was made to be completely separate from the others, preventing any interaction between inmates.
During the Indian independence movement, many freedom fighters were detained here, notably Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
The facility had a reputation for brutally treating inmates, subjecting them to physical assault, hard labour, and solitary confinement.
Up until 1938, it was a prison.
The jail was converted into a national memorial following India’s independence in order to pay tribute to the prisoners of freedom who were held there.
The prison includes seven wings, each with three levels and cells on each level.
It is a popular destination for tourists in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
