  1. Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born at Ratnagiri on 23rd July, 1856.
  2. He came to be known as “the father of the Indian unrest” for his immense contributions to the Indian freedom struggle.
  3. He was lovingly called “Lokmanya” by the people of India.
  4. He has been termed “the maker of modern India” by Mahatma Gandhi.
  5. He famously said, “Swaraj is my birth right and I shall have it!”
  6. This became the cry of many freedom fighters during the Indian Independence Movement.
  7. He was part of the Lal-Bal-Pal trio along with Bipin Chandra Pal and Lala Lajpat Rai.
  8. His radical thoughts contributed greatly to the progress of the freedom struggle.
  9. He died in Mumbai on 1st August, 1920.
