- Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born at Ratnagiri on 23rd July, 1856.
- He came to be known as “the father of the Indian unrest” for his immense contributions to the Indian freedom struggle.
- He was lovingly called “Lokmanya” by the people of India.
- He has been termed “the maker of modern India” by Mahatma Gandhi.
- He famously said, “Swaraj is my birth right and I shall have it!”
- This became the cry of many freedom fighters during the Indian Independence Movement.
- He was part of the Lal-Bal-Pal trio along with Bipin Chandra Pal and Lala Lajpat Rai.
- His radical thoughts contributed greatly to the progress of the freedom struggle.
- He died in Mumbai on 1st August, 1920.
