  1. Aruna Asaf Ali was a publisher, political activist, and educator from India. 
  2. She was a vocal advocate for Indian independence 
  3. She is best known for raising the Indian National Flag at the Gowalia Tank Maidan in Bombay in 1942 during a Quit India Cause, which gave the movement one of its most enduring images.
  4. She joined the Indian National Congress and took part in the Salt Satyagraha’s public processions. 
  5. She was detained in 1931 even though the Gandhi-Irwin Pact called for the release of all political prisoners. 
  6. When Mahatma Gandhi intervened, her fellow female prisoners who had initially refused to leave the facility unless she was also released gave in.
  7. After being released, she did not become particularly politically involved until 1942.
  8. She even ignored Gandhi’s order to surrender herself in 1946, demonstrating her independence.
  9. She continued to be involved in politics after independence and was elected as Delhi’s first Mayor.
  10. Additionally, she received the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1997 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1992.
