Jalebi is a very popular snack food that has originated from the middle east of the Indian subcontinent.
The name Jalebi comes from the Arabic word “Zalabia,” meaning a sweet dish that is prepared in syrup.
It goes by many names, including jilapi, zelepi, jilebi, jilipi, zulbia, jerry, mushabak, z’labia, zengoula or zalabia.
Jalebi is made from flour, gram flour (besan), baking soda and water that is fermented for several hours.
The dish even became a mainstay as Prasadam in temples.
Jalebi is extremely sweet and crunchy.
With time, it became a popular addition to Indian festivals, weddings and even temples.
In India, Jabalpur is a state where jalebi is extremely popular.
In English, jalebi is called funnel cake.
In a festival in India called Dussehra, jeebi becomes the main dish. It is so because it is believed by a lot that jalebi was Lord Rama’s favourite dessert.
